You may wish to schedule an appointment with one of the physicians in our UNMC Family Practice Residency Program. These doctors are spending the last two years of their residency in North Platte, honing their skills as rural family medicine physicians.  These young doctors have completed medical school and are spending two years in the rural residency training program, specializing in rural family medicine.

Midlands Family Medicine and our local medical community was selected by the University of Nebraska to host a family practice physician training program. This speaks very highly of the top quality physicians in our community, and of our local hospital, Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

We are very proud that we were selected to host this prestigious program and we are very excited about the interest level and commitment of the physicians in our community and the hospital to mentor future generations of family practice physicians.

In addition to their primary responsibilities at Midlands Family Medicine, resident physicians perform rotations with the following care providers: North Platte Orthopedic and Sports Medicine, North Platte Obstetrics, Adolescent and Childcare Specialists, North Platte Foot Clinic, Platte Valley Skin Clinic, Great Plains Heart and Vascular Center, Great Plains Health - Cancer Center, General Surgery and Emergency Room Services, Neurology, Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology Associates, Urology, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Platte Valley Skin Clinic, and Fitzpatrick Ear, Nose & Throat Clinic.

The patient care providers of Midlands Family Medicine serve as faculty and teaching staff for a variety of future medical professionals. In this role, we continue to insure future health care professionals are well educated in caring for the needs of individual families. We maintain an active teaching role for physicians-in-training, medical students, nurse-practitioner students, and nursing students.

Garrett Mockler is the PGY-3 resident from UNMC joining us at Midlands Family Clinic. For his undergraduate and graduate work, he attended the University of Utah. Medical school was attended at Trinity School of Medicine in St Vincent and the Grenadines with clinical rotations in Chicago, IL, and Salt Lake City, UT. Following his medical school training while awaiting residency, he worked as a medical scribe for an ENT clinic in Salt Lake City. Garrett is newly married to Alicen. He is excited to be joining us in North Platte and looking forward to the experiences this community provides.

Dr. Michael Nelson is currently a Family Medicine resident at UNMC in the rural training track located in North Platte.  He grew up in a small town in Iowa, before going to the University of Iowa for undergraduate studies, Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, MN for chiropractic college and the University of Science, Arts and Technology in Montserrat for medical school.  He practiced as a chiropractor for 18 years before going to medical school.  He met his Brazilian wife in Iowa City, when she came to visit her brother, who was Mike’s undergraduate college roommate.  In his spare time, Mike enjoys fitness, nutrition and horses.
